Is it cruel to lock a cat within a bedroom when disappearing for a few hours?

Me and my boyfriend have 2 kittens...both 6 months outmoded from the same litter. When we be off, we come home to find things broken or knocked over and the christmas tree messed up. I started putting them the bedroom near the door closed with their litter box food and toys. He say it is cruel and always leaves them out when he leaves. Am I wrong to put them surrounded by the room like that or is he wrong within thinking that it is cruel?

Answers:    Its not cruel as long as you leave in that litter box food and toys in the room.
no its not when i sign out for a weekend to visit family unit i leave my cat surrounded by a room. Just be sure to have the t.v or radio on because if it isnt on teh cat will move about crazy. and also if its jsut for a few hours a little food and hose wouldnt hurt. And since they are kittens jsut like you said you do the toys are a flawless i dea and of course the litter! Its not cruel.
