Why do dogs eat their own dodo?

my dog wont stop eating his own dodo and he is getting very sick!!!
it is a sign that they are lacking iron.
you mean like the dodo bird..
i think you mean doodoo....
Not just dogs my 1 year old loves pulling it from her nappy
the poop helps it's stomach to digest
take him to the vet, enough said...
Thats just something dogs do.
Its a natural instinct, if they were in the wild and lived in dens that would be how they would clean them.
because it tastes really good. trust me, i've tried it.
nutrients! my rabbit did the same. apparently it has many vitamins! LOL!
Because he loves whatever your feeding him so much he wants to eat it again.
You may want to talk to a vet he shouldn't be getting sick, but I believe the reason he eats his own feces is that they don't produce a enough of a enzyme that there digestive system needs to properly digest there food so they eat there feces are even other animals to recover this enzyme, This shouldn't make him sick though you should see a Vet to find out what is making him sick.
my friends dog does the same then after they are sick apparently its a stress thing of being told off especially if its in the house
because she is cool thats why or maybe she is looking for a reason to get you to brush her teeth.. she dosnt have a balanced diet talk to your vet ....
Nutrients and proteins. However it isn't very good if they eat all of it. There are certain sprays to spray on the poop so your dog will not like the taste of it.
maybe your dog is sick or lacking something. it is very rare for a dog to eat it's own poop. the poop is all waste with different types of bacteria that the body needs to get rid of, that's why he is sick. take him to a vet please. love dogs
lol. wow i never knew that. i had a dog and the smell of its own poo annoyed my dog. well ur lucky, you have a recycling machine- it might be interested in human do do. nothing like greener dogs. lol. take it to the vet- im not sure about the idea of iron in dodo. did u sprinkle chicken flavor to his dodo?
* Coprophagia is a condition that compels dogs to consume feces.

* Why does the dog engage in this habit? A dog may ingest fecal matter for various reasons:

He may be hungry and has no access to real food.

You may be feeding a food lacking in sufficient nutrients and/or not appropriate for your particular dog.

When a dog is fed low-quality and/or inappropriate dog food, he feels compelled to eat more of it in an attempt to satisfy his body's craving for nutrients. As a result, the dog is ingesting excess food, and a large proportion of the food goes through his digestive system undigested. The resulting stools smell and look fairly close to the food that the dog previously consumed, so the dog tries to consume the 'food' again. This is not just a vulgar habit; it is a cry for health. The dog needs a better diet that will enable him to absorb the nutrients his body needs.

The dog may be consuming feces out of boredom, loneliness, anxiety or stress.

A dog who is confined to a kennel, chained, or restricted to a small yard or other space may eat his feces to occupy himself or clean his personal space. This dog needs to be exercised and played with several times a day.

Some breeds instinctively like to carry things in their mouths. Picking up feces and carrying it around may signal that the dog needs more daily exercise, mental stimulation and interaction with his people.

A yard or kennel where stools are allowed to pile up may prompt a dog to 'clean up' his stools. Be sure to clean the dog's area every day, and preferably right after the dog eliminates.

The emotional stress of being left alone or restricted to a small area for long periods of time without the companionship of the caregiver can result, for some dogs, in the eating of his own feces.
Dogs eat their own dodo because they learn best by watching. So I sujest you should stop eating your poop or do it in private and not in front of your dog.
First to Rea: Your rabbit eats his own feces becasue ALL rabbits do. Rabbits' digestive systems do not properly break down their food in the first pass. They need to eat their own feces in order to properly extract all nutrients.

Dogs may eat their own food for different reasons. Dogs have a high sense of smell. Dogs also digest their food quickly. As a result, some of the original food comes through in the waste. Your dog smells that and therefore eats his own feces. My Dal does this too.

Dogs typically grow out of this phase once they reach adulthood, but you are right, they can become ill doing this. I recommend spending $20 on a product obtained from your vet. It's a powder you sprinkle on his food. It will deter him from eating his own waste. Also, if you catch him in the act, reprimand him (with a firm voice, but no yelling or hitting). If you are the "alpha" he'll learn not to do this because it displeases you. The combination of the two, plus age, should get him to stop.

Good luck!
This question has been answered here many times, so you may want to do a search on dogs eating their own poop, feces, etc. My dog has done this since I got her at 10 wks. She's now 2+. I've read that puppies often learn this from their mom cleaning up after her puppies. My Vet said it is a behavior issue - not nutritional or boredom. I'm home w/my dog, so she's not lonely, she's exercised regularly & I feed a high quality kibble (Candidae at the time; now Innova EVO). I also "pick up" ASAP but sometimes she is too fast for me - LOL.

The SEP (Stop Eating Poop) powder didn't work, but DETER pills did. However, after about a year, she started doing it again! So, we're back on DETER! The Vet advised to continue to give the pill occasionally once she stops eating her poop. I will continue to do it. My dog is a real "Foodie" and gulps her food, so I wonder if she's not disgesting it well. My little girl is sooo darling, but this behavior is disgusting - so I know how you feel. Good Luck getting this under control.
