Myth or certainty? Fish grow to the size of container?

whats a good size reservoir for a 5 inch 3-4 old pleco? Hes alone surrounded by a 30 gallon tank

Answers:    Partially myth, to a certain extent not. Most fish will grow normally, even contained by an inhumanely small tank. Goldfish are the exception.

What happen with goldfish is when they start to surface crowded, the emit a hormone that cause their bodies to stop getting larger. The problem with this is that while the outside body stops growing, the inside organs verbs to grow until they're too large for the body they're within. Eventually the organs shut down and the fish dies a drawn out and needless extermination.

For a pleco, it will depend on the type. For a common brown pleco, I'd move him up to a 55g or larger soon.
I dont know in the order of your pleco but my goldfish never grew to the size of the tank
