Cycling reservoir...?

I'm cycling my 20L tank. I hold a heater and a filter running, two live plants, and a adjectives heap of gravel from an established container. Is there anything else I should do to lend a hand bacteria grow? Light or no restrained, for example, and artificial or natural if lighting is required. I've only lost one fish, I'd like to avoid any more unnecessary fatalities. :(

Answers:    Your question are quite valid here, and no fault to goody, but I'm sorry man, you are quite a bit bad on that, no malice intended, and I'll explain.

Ok within terms of your cycle, directly, to aid the bacteria grow? The best and fastest entry you can do is add the filter medium from an establish filter already. This has the live culture of germs needed and basically make your tank prepared to go. The frothy really has negligable effects surrounded by terms of your cycle, but would be biddable for your plants. Though plants do absorb some of the nitrogen cycle compounds formed, they also will release them pay for in the hose at a later point, so it really doesn't give support to so much.

Ok now let's concordat with the input from Goody. Yes oxygenation is a flawless thing, but where on earth your bacteria resides, will be around your powered filtration area. Some filter like an aquaclear enjoy what's called biomax and made for germs to reside there as economically. The reason the biomax is put end in the filter box, and at the point where on earth the water flow is going into the container, is because the oxygen levels will be extreme there. The break of the sea suface and where the marine from the filter enters cause better absorbtion, but this does not directly interact near the bacteria, it's lone when the water itself pass back into the filter.

Some of the germs does live in the substrate yes, but probably with the sole purpose about 10% of that. The bulk of that germs again resides in your powered filtration area, as very well as any area designed for biological filtration, not so much roughly speaking the substrate.

You'd have a miracle cycle or register cycle time as well if your cycle solely went 10-15 days. It's more resembling 6-8 weeks. It takes nearly 10-15 days just to clear the ammonia phase of the cycle itself, and the nitrite stage is even longer afterwards that. Your tank is ripened and cycled when you read 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and only read nitrates.

All surrounded by all, in the order of the only things you can do would be seize filter media from an established container. You can use gravel as well, but that will not render your container immediately usable, as filter medium would. Cut your food down you are giving as well. Fish do not use food contained by the same comportment you and I do. They do not use it for internal heat so you are not going to damage them feeding them one time a daytime, and only as much food as they will consume, entirely. Fish almost never die from drought of food.

Just setting it up running will not work.
Hi
Look, If you want that the microbes grow up, you must Consider this important points for the energy of the bacterium.

1.-Oxygenation: This factor is created for the constant Movement of the water, you can oblige this using a heater or a nouns pump, but, you have a boiler, right?, use it.
2.-Substrate(Gravel or sand): In this place the bacteria will be established as their home.
3.-Temperature: A level Between 25-30oC
4.-Food.- Ammonia is the food that requires the bacteria, to this, you must join a little bit of food within the process of cycling

That's all, you must keep on a time Between 15 or 20 days
Ok
