Large goldfish fins deteriorating?
Answers: Hi Becky, this sounds like fin rot which is cause by poor water conditions. You entail to make sure the ammonia & nitrite are nought, anything above=bad water conditions. You want to rectify this with partial wet changes of around 30% using same warmth, treated water. This will dilute the toxins if done frequently plenty. You also need to consider the size of the cistern he is in. You don't say-so how big he is but anything less than 20 gallons is probably going to be too small & requirements to be well filter.
Regarding the deterioration of the fins-they should regenerate given good river conditions-you would be advised to attach a little brackish to his water to aid this recouping. You can use sea/kosher or rock salt but not table saline which is poisonous. Check out the green chart on the attached link & dose the cistern to around 0.3% remembering to only donate the same amount rear in proportion to respectively water adjustment. After approx 2 weeks the salt can be stopped & the regular partial marine changes will leisurely remove it completely.
