How should i be in motion in the order of varying my substrate?

Ok i have a 10 gallon reservoir with 10 neons and a couple of guppies, my uncle give me the tank a while ago beside some really colorful substrate which doesn't really look good next to the fish in the container. I want to buy some darker substrate to put contained by but im not sure how i should switch the two without mixing them. I also don't own a spare tank to put them surrounded by during this switch, should i put them in a bucket or some sorta container that hasn't be exposed to chemicals of any sort (eg. the bucket i use to change the marine maybe?) and use some of the river from their tank. I also want to know if i should tolerate the tank settle for a daylight or two after changing the substrate for the microbes and such to acclimate to the new substrate?
Can this adjectives "removing the fish" thing be avoided by of late changing the substrate beside the fish in it? or would they die from adjectives the stress?
Any suggestions/sites/opinion/comments or anything else is appreciated, thanks : )

Answers:    Assuming your reservoir has be up for a while (which you say surrounded by the question but of late making sure!)...

Rinse the new gravel thoroughly. Then agree to it soak in a bucketful of chlorine and chloramine treated sea.

Get some buckets. Clean thoroughly! Syphon off 10% of your sea and throw away. Now syphon off around 30% of your marine but syphon the TOP OF THE WATER, not the gravel (so the water should be cleaner). Stop syphoning, and verbs your fish to this bucket.

You should now enjoy not that much water contained by your tank. If it's still for a moment high, remove some more into a bucket to hold on to to put back contained by. Scoop up all your outdated gravel. This may take a while but I'm sure you can find some things to relieve, things shaped like those sweet scoopers are unfaultable.

Now transfer your current gravel in. Don't verbs about making cloudiness, it's will settle soon. Add adjectives the water that you've kept pay for into the tank, except for the wet with the fishes within. Let it settle for 30 minutes - 1 hour. Do a quick question paper for nitrites/nitrates/ammonia if you like. Once any cloudiness have settled, add your alien fish back surrounded by. You may want to do this using a bag to acclimatise them resembling you did when you first got them, as nearby will be a slight change contained by water parameter.

Keep an eye on the levels for a week or so but it should be fine :) dutiful luck!
Using the water progress bucket to temporarily house your fish would be fine while you change out substrate. I would suggest adding up some Melafix to the tank to lend a hand with the stress.
