A girl at my yard have a cob and he wears one she said it help him keep concerntration (his mind does tend to wonder). But consequently someone else told me it was to protect the proboscis and stop rubbing from the noseband? Can anyone enlighten me? What do they really do?

Answers:    It's call a shadow roll and it has nought to do with protecting the antenna. They are used in steeplechasers as some horses will try to hurdle shadows on the ground which will slow them down or spook at them. The shadow roll is also seen contained by show-jumping for horses who have a penchant to raise their head too high and evade the bit. The shadow roll is intended to correct this by forcing the horse to lower his pave the way in directive to see the jump; when the horse's come first is raised the roll blocks his delusion.
Red Rum was notable for the one that he wore.
Its to stop the noseband from rubbing. A horse at the stable I ride has scar and patches of spike missing from his previous owner failing to get him one. Concentration really have nothing to do beside it.
