Why are pets call pets?

Why are pets called pets? Is it b/c we pet them or do we christen it petting them b/c they are called pets. And what give or take a few when we pet like a human, they aren't pets, but we ring up it petting. Please help me.
Answers: Hi at hand...a pet is called a "pet" because it is an animal kept for companionship and joy, as opposed to livestock, laboratory animals, working animals or sport animals, which are kept for financial reasons.

Petting would be considered an feat that is a form of affection which creates bliss.

I'm not sure but I always hear it started along time ago. DOG spelled backwards is GOD and this is man's best friend. Not sure what Pets stand for
