Is it okay to use shredded broadsheet w/ mundane (store bought) treatise bedding for rats?
Answers: My first view is that a glass cistern isn't good for housing rats, especially multiple rats. They could really benefit from a nice round up, say, from www.martinscages.com . It'd afford them more room, ammonia wouldn't build up in it as against the clock, air element would be better, and thus it would be better for the rats' overall health.
The ink is non-toxic contained by most newspapers, it's only messy, and again, not recommended. The fine residue that comes from shredding serious newspaper by hand would aggravate the rats' respiratory tracts. Carefresh is better, although even that have some fine dust.
I've used shredded newspaper next to hedgehogs and degus in olden times and have hear that it is safe for most small animals. Just to be sure, hail as your local newspaper and ask them if they use non toxic ink.
Also, monitor your rats to fashion sure that they don't try to eat the weekly or the carefresh as both can cause serious problems if too much is ingested.

I don't see why not.
As long as the paper is non-toxic (which most are) it'll be undisruptive health erudite, but if it's a light coloured rat the ink can stain it's belly, not really a problem unless you're planning on showing them rotten at shows though.
i use it as bedding for my rats. i shred it up and just put a big mound of it surrounded by the cage. they love to organise it themselves, so it's obedient for play time. i'v had my girls for nearly a year presently and they've never gotten sick form newspaper. contained by fact they don't approaching anything else as their bedding!
